Research tells us social emotional skills are considered the top needs in the 21st century workforce. Developing these skills at a young age is crucial to success later in life. A lack of social emotional skills as early as kindergarten leads to an assortment of risk factors as adults, including higher dependency on drugs and alcohol, lower education attainment, and increased dependence on the social safety net. Developing these skills is shown to be an important step in ending the cycle of poverty. These skills are quickly becoming a major focus of North American education.
There is no group better than Olympians and Paralympians at role modeling and teaching the most important social emotional traits such as teamwork, goal setting, persistence, grit, and having a growth mindset. Our collaboration between Classroom Champions and the Canadian Olympic Committee during the 2018 Winter Olympic Games created a direct connection between hundreds of thousands of grade K-8 students and Canada’s most inspirational athletes.
