More about Certification of Responsible Event Production Practices
Mass participation sports like running races touch millions of people each year. In the United States alone, there were over 24 million road race participants in 2012. While pursuing health and fitness, however, millions of people are having a negative impact on the environment and having a social impact on communities that may not be positive. The opportunities to reduce the environmental footprints and increase the social impacts of these events are significant and manyfold. Our event certification offers spectators and participants alike assurance that an event has been responsibly produced. Specifically, we offer certification credits in the following areas: waste management, climate & energy, procurement & sourcing, community impact, promoting healthy lifestyles, community involvement and inclusion. Within each section, there are a number of credits available for things like diverting waste from landfill, using renewable energy sources and alternative fuel vehicles, offering food and beverages that are certified organic or are locally produced, enhancing local community infrastructure, and developing plans for outreach to under-represented groups. Our vision is of a world where responsibly produced sports events are the norm – a world where spectators and participants alike are fully aware and supportive of the efforts event organizers are making.
