More about Capoeira4Refugees
Having seen family or friends killed, losing their homes and livelihoods and the routine of a normal and safe childhood, many children and youth around the world suffer from significant war trauma, and show negative behaviours, including drug use, depression, aggression or vulnerability to extremist ideas. Refugees in specific often face disastrous living conditions, including no access to education, no adequate health care, and especially children and youth suffer from the lack of leisure activities and educational programmes. Capoeira4Refugees uses the unique art-form of capoeira, combining sport, play and music, to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of these children and youth in conflict zones and other marginalized communities. Capoeira brings fun, movement, friendship and an incredible sense of community to the lives of these young people, having a significant positive effect on their physical mobility and health, self-esteem, their positive interaction with peers, teachers, parents, and their overall happiness. Through our social capoeira classes, we help them overcome their traumatic experiences and provide a safe space in which they can develop and blossom.
