More about Budo for Peace
Youth violence is a huge problem in Israel. Various ethnic groups and poor immigrant children grow up in the country’s periphery, feeling disconnected from mainstream society. Many turn to violence to gain a sense of belonging. Budo for Peace’s 2-year educational program works to counter this phenomenon by physically and mentally strengthening children-at-risk.
Martial arts trainings mixed with role playing games, stories and events connect the sport to a behavioral code of conduct that demands respect, tolerance and non-violence; it also stresses equality and inclusiveness through shared rituals and language. Participants all wear the same white uniform, remove shoes and bow before entering the training hall, and bow to one another before each task.
Thus, they develop self control, learn to treat others with respect and gain inner-strength to face violent situations. The program provides at-risk students with tools to prevent violence and feel included within a group of peers. The program’s impact is visible at local, regional and national encounters, which develop athletic ability and civic responsibility within a socially inclusive environment.
