More about Boxgirls Nairobi Eastlands
Boxgirls Nairobi Eastlands delivers boxing and leadership programmes to change the lives of women and girls. We provide daily girls-only sports training, job preparation and outreach activities to business, government and media to improve women's safe use of public space, fight idleness and build self-confidence in disadvantaged youth.
Boxgirls Nairobi has helped many girls and young women in the informal settlements around Nairobi deal with the gender based violence in the post election skirmishes that saw Kenya descend into chaos. We work together with Boxgirls International to qualify new female boxing coaches to reach out to more schoolchildren around Nairobi. We currently train in 8 different city zones of ca. 15 boxers each.
We work with partner to deliver health information. We started a web cafe in January 2009 to help us learn computer skills and earn income. Our members are trained in participatory video to tell our own stories about transforming aggression into ambition through boxing and leading their community into a more just and inclusive future. Boxgirls Nairobi Eastlands was able to secure funding from Women Win and the Embassy of the Netherlands and is a member of the Sport for Social Change Network coordinated by Auma Obama
