More about Born in Africa Social Development
Born in Africa provides academic, social and life skill programs. The academic program focuses on education and tertiary studies. The social program is driven by an individual mentorship program and during the life skill programs the attention is focused on enriching our learners by exposing them to life outside their rather limited daily routine.
We work with a total amount of 430 Colored and Xhosa children. The children in our program all come from severe impoverished homes where the basic minimum wage is their income, social grants of R290 (2 Euro) per child are their income. The children in the program are between 6 and 21 years of age. They are all school going learners or at tertiary level from Gr 1 till 4 year university students. We select the learners for our program by firstly looking at their academic capability, their social back ground and their families’ financial situation. We monitor their participation in all our activities by means of a “warning system “whereby the learners are issued warnings should they not comply by standard set rules of participation throughout the program. This covers the academic, life skills as well as social sides of the program.
