More about Bophelo Ke Kgwele (The Game, the Life)
IMBEWU strives to achieve greater equality, tolerance and social cohesion by providing educational and life-skills support to the disadvantaged youth of the townships using sport as a motor for change.
The project strives to respond to the most pressing needs of the youth: lack of role models, poor quality education, lack of after-school supervision and exposure to risk behaviours. Public schools suffer greatly from a lack of funds and of the necessary human resources to implement the curriculum, with over-crowding and absenteeism the norm. After-school supervision is often inexistent and children are left unsupervised, leaving them vulnerable to crime and violence. Physical education is not a priority in the school programme, with few facilities available for sports activities. Due to the lack of secure areas and activities as well as no supervision, children remain vulnerable and easily manipulated, exposing them to risk behaviours such as violence, alcohol and drug abuse, gangs and early unprotected sexual activity, thus preventing them from building a decent future for themselves.
