More about Bophelo Ke Kgwele
The Mamelodi township is typical of the situation of most South African townships. Malnutrition and diseases are still common and substance abuse, crime and violence widespread. Often orphaned or from difficult family situations, this disaffected youth is left without a role model. Furthermore, they frequently carry the burden of supporting their family.
Education is mediocre at best and still suffers from the racial and geographical segregation of the apartheid era. Public schools, whilst plentiful, seriously lack the necessary human and financial resources to implement their curriculum. Overcrowding, poor attendance and a lack of learning materials make it impossible for the children to learn. Furthermore, parents are not equipped to provide a suitable learning environment for their children.
Sport and physical education are not part of the South African public schools program. Secure and supervised areas to play and learn outside of school are inexistent. Without access to secure facilities and suitable activities, The children are often left unsupervised on the streets exposing them to many risk behaviours: violence, alcoholism, drug abuse, gangs, HIV/AIDS.
