More about Birmingham/SISU, Sweden Sport and Social Inclusion(BSSSSI)
Sporting and cultural exchanges of staff, ideas and experiences around the line guide of sport, established in 2005 between Birmingham City Council (BCC) and SISU, part of Swedish Sports Federation. This initial linkage let to the project, Birmingham/SISU, Sweden Sport and Social Inclusion (BSSSSI). Sweden looks with increasing interest at Birmingham’s approach to sport within its multi- ethnic city context, becoming itself a multi- cultural society.
At the same time, Birmingham is examining the Swedish example of sport being an integral part of Swedish society, as opposed to being an “add-on”. A network of ongoing trans-national dialogue, activities and exchanges has been created by the partnership: Birmingham City Council (Sports Development, Youth Service and the Regional European and International Division - RE&ID), the University of Birmingham, City United Football Club Aston and SISU. This is a small-scale-people-people project. Since 2005, approx.
40 SISU-associated persons have sports-studied Birmingham and approx. 15 Birmingham-based sports-education professionals have study-visited Sweden. The most recent being: Robert Palmer, BCC Basketball Development Officer to study Swedish high levels of participation in sport.( Sweden March 2009 – funded by Leonardo da Vinci Mobility Programme (EU ). Resulting in a creative, ongoing working partnership: locally and trans-nationally (see photograph 1).
