More about Beyond The Game
"Beyond the Game!" is a new concept of Youth Development through Sport (YDS), consisting in building life skills through mass participation after-school sports activities. The project is street outreach-based, focusing on out-of-school youth in high-risk sites such as informal settlements, and at their most vulnerable ages as they face social and health challenges. Beyond providing disadvantaged youth with the daily opportunity to practise sport –fun and competitive - in a quality environment, the YDS Project is based on a 1-year curriculum, composed of 15 different modules. Each module uses innovative and creative techniques to address specific social and health topics to reduce at-risk behaviours, bridge social divides, increase health-related awareness, educational aspirations, self-esteem and social connectedness.
The curriculum emphasizes ongoing active and experiential learning, with each topic-specific module focusing on the development of positive topic-related attitudes, contributing to the building of a responsible youth. The approach is to create sustainable social change by motivating participants to become opinion leaders in their social network of peers and siblings. The initiative is a prototype, which will inspire further replications focusing on similar outcome measures. Our project aligns itself with government and corporate interest in strengthening leadership capacities and capacities of communities.
