More about Basketball Plus
FIBA's Basketball Plus Strategy seeks to facilitate capable National Basketball Federations to deliver high quality basketball activities that allow participants to become healthy, contributing members of the community. FIBA’s Oceania office are developing the sport of basketball regionally in the Indo-Pacific and see a seamless connection with this objective and using sport development to influence positive social development outcomes. The Strategy is currently active as the Hoops for Health and Mum’s A Hero programs. In each country the program is slightly different to account for the individual needs of local communities. In Fiji, Kiribati, and Vanuatu, the program uses basketball to contribute to the awareness and prevention of non-communicable disease. In Fiji and Timor-Leste, the program uses basketball for gender empowerment. In Papua New Guinea, the program uses basketball to address youth crime and social cohesion. The structure, however, is the same in all countries as FIBA supports the development on National Basketball Federations to grow the sport of basketball and use that tool to contribute to relevant local social development efforts.
