More about Basketball Health Corps (BHC)
Rwanda is one of the world’s poorest countries and faces major social issues including unemployment, malnutrition, disease, and extreme poverty. With 67% of the population under the age of 25, Rwanda’s youngest generation is in the greatest need of increased opportunities for education and social engagement. The Basketball Health Corps (BHC) uses the sport of basketball to address these social issues by: 1) promoting physical activity and wellness; 2) supporting equal access to sport; and 3) empowering communities to work together to create social change breaking the cycle of poverty and disease. The BHC’s innovative model combines a highly structured on/off-court program that creates a sport infrastructure in the communities we serve. This model constructs new basketball courts, provides equipment, employs local teens/adults to serve as coaches & curriculum implementers. The cornerstone of the BHC is our custom-developed health curriculum, Turi Kumwe, Kinyarwanda for “We are Together” and demonstrates for youth that when we work together we can overcome the heavy burdens of growing up in a developing world and realize our true potential.
