More about Asian Star
Football is hugely popular amongst British Asians. However, British Asian communities are still significantly underrepresented across the game both and professional and grassroots levels, with only a small handful of British Asians appearing in the Premier League or English Football League. Outdated and inaccurate stereotypes about why Asian people do not enjoy greater participation in football, along with the lack of visibility and Asian role models, discourage children and young people from Asian communities from getting involved and sends out a message that football is not open to their communities.
In response to this, in 2009 Chelsea FC launched Asian Star, a programme open to boys aged nine to twelve years old from Asian communities, and which offers them the opportunity to give football a try. Those who demonstrate particular talent are subsequently offered a year-long placement at one of our Foundation Development Centres.
