Ascend works to empower Afghan women and girls through mountain climbing, by creating opportunities for them to achieve athletic feats thought impossible for women, to bond with one another through sport, and to contribute to their communities.
Afghanistan is a society that is hostile to women in many ways and where women are extremely disempowered. To break the cycle of ongoing conflict, the country needs strong women leaders at home and in public life. Our program trains participants to strengthen themselves physically, mentally and emotionally and to speak out to encourage others to do the same. Our team members use their platform as accomplished athletes to speak publicly, especially to school children, to encourage girls and boys to move beyond the limitations currently placed on girls.
