More about Armory College Prep
Armory College Prep addresses the systemic issue of low high school graduation rates and, consequently, even direr rates of college acceptances among NYC’s disadvantaged youth. Participation in his own school’s track team led Dr. Sander, the Armory Foundation’s Founder and Executive Director, to correlate success on the track with success off the track.
Armory College Prep was developed as an educational success program to compliment the athletic training of the Foundation’s underserved student athletes; the program ensures high school graduation and college matriculation. Following practice at the Armory with their high school track teams, the students participate in college preparation courses, SAT classes and one-on-one counselling. In many cases, these young athletes are training and studying to become the first college graduates in their families.
The lesson learned as team members and as individual athletes cultivates their tenacity and ambition; this increases their hunger for success and leads to the greater likelihood of completing high school and being accepted into college. It is rare that these young student athletes have the opportunity to experience and to demonstrate these values during the regular school day.
