More about Amigos del Mar – Surf for Social Inclusion and Equitable Education
Our Amigos del Mar-project aims to contribute to social development as well as a growth in education and sports for girls, boys and children with physical and mental disabilities of the island Tierra Bomba, Cartagena de Indias, Colombia.
The program supports increasing the school enrollment rate in the community with using water sports as a methodological axis. It gets young people away from the problematic environment by presenting surf as a gateway to sports and social change. Seeing other opportunities and having the motivation of going to surf on the weekends, makes them reintegrate school. Furthermore, through water sports they are formed in environmental thinking, discipline and important values like responsibility, commitment, respect, empathy, solidarity and companionship. This is how a scenario is offered, where this vulnerable population can achieve a better future.
Thus for the project, water sport and its values are a vehicle for the improvement of social cohesion and conditions as well as local development. It changes the mentality of a youth that lives in an excluded community in a positive way and helps them to get further in life.
