More about Amani Yawezekana Kibera
Football has a huge following in Kenya and women football is unique and rare in Kenya, no matter their ethnic affiliation. Its popularity among people of all ages especially the youth (who are in most cases vulnerable in being lured to engage in violence) makes it a perfect entry point for social change, peace and social cohesion. Sports have the potential to prevent conflict, help in the healing and reconciliation process and enabling communities to coexist.
Sporting activities can create safe spaces for interaction where communication can be restored and understanding and tolerance built. Women football is a great crowd puller and by pulling this big crowd it becomes easy for dissemination of peace messages just as witnessed during the passed post election violence where Kibera Women used football to mobilize the community and share with them about peaceful coexistence. This saw the birth of Kibera’s big women movement, Kibera Women for Peace & Fairness with 820 members drawn from all villages of Kibera Slums
