More about Amani Kibera
Amani Kibera uses sports to mobilize young people and educate them on issues of leadership, peace and nonviolence in Kibera slums. The organization facilitates organization of thematic sports tournaments and camps where youth share and interact freely. Kibera slum has a violent history since 1992 where different ethnic groups have turned against each other and the worst was witnessed during the 2007 post election violence where tribes turned against each other with both victims and perpetrators being majorly youth. Amani Kibera through elaborate consoltation with youth groups/clubs has reliable identified unemployment and lack information as they key issue making young people susceptible to negative influence where these is either politically, religiously or based on ethnicity.
Started in October 2007, Amani Kibera seeks to build a solid community base where youth will make informed decisions and make the right choices for their good and that of their entire community realizing that there are alternatives to violence and that dialogue, building friendship, understanding and appreciating diversity in cultures is the key to peaceful co-existence. Peace thematic tournaments with peace and nonviolence messages branded material are distributed to the participants throughout the tournament this include; branded soccer balls, t-shirts banners, posters and fliers.
