More about AMANDLA After-School Tutoring through Football
Khayelitsha, AMANDLA’s implementation site, is a global focus area for many socioeconomic challenges. Khayelitsha is characterized by extremely high crime rates, youth unemployment of more than 70%, and a basic education system that places South Africa amongst the worst performing countries in the world (World Economic Forum ranked South Africa 140th out of 144).
The lack of access to a basic standard of education, particularly in township areas, is fuelling issues of poverty, youth unemployment and inequality. In 2012, in addition to its award-winning and internationally endorsed leadership, life-skills and football programme-model, AMANDLA saw the need to respond formally to the education crisis that is threatening South Africa’s unique vision of a united and peaceful transition into past-Apartheid.
As a result, the “After-School Tutoring through Football” Programme was designed and implemented by a team of youth participants, AMANDLA staff, local teachers, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and the International Rotary Foundation as funder. Using the AMANDLA Fair Play Football scoring system as an incentive for participation, the Programme engages female and male learners from Ikhusi Primary School, situated next to the AMANDLA Safe-Hub in Khayelitsha, in tutoring sessions with the aim of improving their academic performance.
