More about AFL - Bachar Houli Islamic Program
Australia’s Muslim community since 9/11 has been subject to continuous negative media and has unfairly been stereotyped. The Muslim community has also been unengaged in community sports for a number of the reason these include either opportunities, lack of inclusive environments, socio economic and parental support. Contributing to these factors are the policies surrounding the Islamic schools who don’t participate in organized school sports competition because they are neither defined as private or public schools.
It is evident that engagement in community sports develops a sense of belonging in the community and opens up a number of networks. Based on the above statistics on population numbers it is evident that role models play a significant role in the community and having one Muslim AFL player demonstrates a gap of role models for the 500,00 Muslims in Australia.
The Program conducts an organized football competition, identifies the best talent to fast track their development to become AFL players and future role models for the community. The program also incorporates a diversity education to community clubs on inclusive environments Open communication and the ability for the community to reach Bachar is also pivotal and that’s why the bacharhouli.com.au website was developed.
