More about Action Is Superior To Inaction

To improve the academic standards in the Salwan Girls/Boys School being run for the economically weak children /orphans, this sports programme was initiated. The student strength had fallen to 900 during 1995-96 (from 2,800 during ‘60s), attendance to 45% and Board results 40%. The Mind-Set prevailing was that these children did not want to study and were content with cleaning floors/thuggery/drugs. One day, Mr. Inder Dutt (Architect) was invited for a science exhibition.

Straightening the tie of a student, he asked, “Son, which Games do you play?” “Sir, Video Games”! He initiated Running and integrated the visually challenged girl students in this programme. After a year of training, in 1995, the “Salwan Marathon” with 300 children was started. Running around the streets of Rajinder Nagar, Delhi the race was a great success amongst the students.

Year 2006 saw over 46000 students alongwith 500 visually challenged children running from the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium. The venue was shifted (2007, since Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium was closed for renovation due to the 2010 Commonwealth Games) to the picturesque location of Brar Square, Delhi Cantt. where over 28000 children alongwith 700 visually challenged children ran. Year 2008, 30000 children ran alongwith 740 visually challenged children.
