More about A multi-sport approach to tackling gender inequality
Learning a new sport such has softball allows for both men and women who are beginners to start on a level playing field. Because of this, everyone’s input is equally valued, which is not something that could be said of the other sports. The exchange of knowledge between the local and international coaches has meant that the four communities in Gambia now have coaches who are able to teach softball and can create a sustainable model for the development of the sport.
As these coaches are also members of the community in other regards (such as teachers, police officers etc.) the impact of this collaboration reaches well beyond the field and expands into every aspect of community life in which attitudes are being changed.
