More about Free to Run - Hiking to Heal
Thousands of people who have fled their home countries out of fear of persecution, torture, and conflict are now living as refugees and asylum-seekers in Hong Kong. Female refugees and asylum-seekers in Hong Kong are particularly vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. Before joining our programme, many of our participants were too traumatised to leave their homes, which deepened their social isolation. Free to Run organises hiking and fitness programs to empower women and their families to leave their homes, experience the outdoors, build networks of support and improve their physical and mental health.
Today Free to Run is providing weekly hiking (for women) and professionally-coached track training (mixed gender). All groups regularly participate in local Hong Kong races and are provided with life skills education including health care, nutrition and life coaching. We have recently added swimming lessons and launched a pilot education and mentorship program for the most vulnerable refugees. Starting in May, a psychologist specialised in trauma will also support the hiking program.
