More about 4th Family: Court Science

Opportunities for youth from all racial and economic backgrounds to pursue careers in the STEM fields is crucial to ensure economic opportunity for all in society. Voluntary participation in STEM enrichment during "out-of-school" time is one of the largest drivers for youth electing to study STEM in college. Unfortunately, access to these programs, even when they are free, is limited for marginalized youth due to a lack of awareness and preexisting interest in STEM. The youth in most need for an authentic introduction to the STEM fields, i.e. those who do not already possess STEM interest prior to participation, are excluded.
At 4th Family, we bridge the gap between these marginalized youth and the STEM pipeline by developing sport-science outreach clinics that are deployed within youth sports programs as an authentic training tool. Our programs reach youth athletes who are not already self-selected for STEM enrichment to introduce them to STEM within an activity where they are intrinsically motivated to improve. As such, contrary to traditional STEM programs (e.g. Robotics Clubs) which accelerate privileged youth into STEM careers, our programs use sports to bridge the gap.
