More about 2nd Chance Project – Beyond the Bars initiative
Our project starts inside prison as we believe this is the most effective way of reducing crime and therefore reducing victims of the future. We use sport in prison to target the 3% of the population, who cause 90% of crime in society. We do this because we know sport inspires, engages and provides opportunities for lifelong change.
Key to our success is not only that we design our own system, approach and programmes, it’s the partners we use. We bring partners together (holistic approach) and help them to become more effective and confident at supporting offenders. We know that in doing so, our partners will continue supporting offenders when statutory services drop off and continue to provide positive networks and peer relationships.
Where education and support services often fail to engage offenders in custody, we introduce it through sport academy programmes. Each programme also uses sport to challenge offending behavior, emotional responsibility as part of developing a positive purpose in society. We ensure sport is an active and purposeful part of life in custody and we use it as the message that underpins change and allows change to be a process of value and reward.
