Accessibility through sport will be the central theme at Beyond Sport United 2016, hosted at Barclays Center, on August 9th, with a specific focus on diversity and inclusion. The world’s biggest teams and leagues will unite to lead the conversation on how they can use their influence to create opportunities for people to get involved in sport no matter their background, race or religion.
Founding partners MLB, MLS, NBA, NFL, NHL & WNBA have reaffirmed their collective commitment to better understand how sports can be used to address key social issues that sit at the heart of the work they do, in the communities they serve including: tackling violence, racism, homophobia, bullying, nutrition and access to safe spaces. Supporting the days agenda are Global Partners, Barclays, TIME and UNICEF; National Partners, Equinox and the Guardian, alongside official sponsors WWE and the World Boxing Council.
The day will convene leagues, teams, clubs, governing bodies, rights holders, brands and NGO’s from all corners of the globe, to share best practice and knowledge around how access to sport can change lives, be it through participation, education, inclusion and entertainment. Influential figures from the world of sport, business and politics will share insight through interactive panels, case-studies, and practical sessions.
Speaking ahead this year’s event, Nick Keller, Founder of Beyond Sport, commented: “At a time when the world is so divided, be it through conflict, race, religion or the economy, it has never been so important to open the gateways to sport. We are all aware of sports’ power to tackle prominent social issues, now we must ensure that everyone, from all walks of life, has equal opportunity to benefit from that power. To have the combined influence of the leagues, alongside the support of our partners, we can achieve far reaching impact and make access to sport a reality for all.”
In its sixth edition, Beyond Sport United will be hosted for the first time at Barclays Center, home to the NBA franchise, the Brooklyn Nets and NHL franchise, the New York Islanders.
“We are proud to host the industry-leading conference Beyond Sport United 2016,” said Brett Yormark, CEO of Brooklyn Sports & Entertainment. “Brooklyn is home to 150 nationalities making Barclays Center a fitting place for conversations focused on diversity and inclusion in sports.”
Previous speakers include NBA Commissioner Adam Silver; NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman; MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred; MLS Commissioner Don Garber; New York Yankee Assistant General Manager Jean Afterman; Scott O’Neil, CEO of the Philadelphia 76ers and New Jersey Devils; NBA Global Ambassador Dikembe Mutombo, to name but a few.
