Baroness Amos Joins Beyond Sport and UNICEF At Johannesburg High School

Baroness Amos has joined forces with Beyond Sport and UNICEF South Africa by visiting Dr. E.G Jansen High School in Johannesburg to learn about the importance that sport plays in educational and social development on the first day of the Beyond Sport Summit and Awards 2014.

The Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator Amos spent the morning at the Dr. E.G Jansen High School where she shared her upbringing, her aspirations and her dreams with the pupils, as well as partaking in netball drills and a workshop on putting an end to violence against children worldwide.

UNICEF has been the International Development Partner of Beyond Sport since 2009, with the two organisations working together to raise the profile of the role of sport in ensuring children’s rights and developing an international set of standard for the safeguarding of children in sport.

“Sport is a powerful tool to strengthen social ties and networks, and to promote ideals of peace, fraternity, solidarity, non-violence, tolerance and justice,” said Herve Ludovic de Lys, Country Director for UNICEF South Africa.

The school has been carefully selected by UNICEF South Africa as part of its collaboration with Department of Basic Education and the South African Schools Netball Association, which plans to reach 2.9 million pupils from 3,000 primary and high schools and train 350 coaches and 900 youth leaders. Commenting on Ms. Amos’ visit to Dr. E.G Jansen High School, Nick Keller, Founder of Beyond Sport said: “This visit is the perfect example of the way in which Beyond Sport convenes influencers to promote the way in which sport can be used to create change in young people’s lives. Through our global partnership with UNICEF, today we are showcasing the unique partnership that UNICEF South Africa has built with both sport and government partners to develop the leaders of tomorrow. It is incredibly important that we engage the younger generation through the projects and initiatives that our partners deliver, and that we do so with influential and high-profile opinion leaders such as Baroness Amos.”

The Beyond Sport Summit 2014, which is currently taking place across various venues in Johannesburg, is a gathering of industry leaders and world-renowned athletes to discuss and address the role that sport can play in generating positive social change in South Africa, with youth leadership as a key theme. The Summit will be made up of numerous community site visits, a day of interactive activity at the Nike Football Training Centre in Soweto, and high-level panel talks and discussions at Vodacom World.
