WORLD CUP OF HOCKEY 2016 TO HOST EDUCATIONAL EVENTS
The World Cup of Hockey 2016, a best-on-best international tournament featuring more than 160 NHL players from 14 different countries, will host more than 12,000 students from schools across the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to participate in two STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) events, each with a global studies emphasis.
The initiative is part of the third annual launch of the NHL & NHLPA Future Goals program, the world’s largest digital STEM education initiative. Since its launch in 2014, nearly 1 million students from more than 6,500 schools across North America have been trained in the free online course – Hockey Scholar – which uses hockey to teach STEM concepts. Through the program’s interactive and simulation-based learning, students in grades 4-7 have dedicated more than 3.2 million hours to STEM learning, improving their knowledge of core STEM concepts by 74% (average; measured by pre- and post-assessments within the course.)
The next event will be Thursday, September 22nd 2016 in downtown Toronto. The STEM Career Panel Discussion will be attended by Colonel Chris Hadfield, Canadian astronaut; Gary Bettman, NHL Commissioner; Don Fehr, National Hockey League Players’ Association Executive Director; and Brad Boyes, fellow NHL alumnus.
