US Olympians Alex Morgan, Simone Manuel, Sue Bird and Chloe Kim have teamed up to found Togethxr, a new sports and lifestyle company for women’s sport aimed at promoting the stories and voices of women across the sector.
The four say the new venture will give a platform to women involved in elite sport, telling their stories as well as touching on other areas such as culture, fashion and wellness. The endeavor will focus on inclusive storytelling and content that highlights the convergence of culture and sport.
Created specifically for Gen Z and millennial women, and on the back of a 2018 UNESCO report which noted that though women make up 44% of all participants in sport, women’s sport only receives 4% of overall sports coverage. The founders see this demographic as hungry for content that elevates their voices in a media environment that marginalizes them.
“What we aim to do is challenge this [4%] statistic and provide women with a community and a platform that has never existed before,” Bird said in an email. “The opportunity that Togethxr has is to change the way we view women in the media. There are certain perceptions [and] depictions out there that are so narrow because the stories either haven’t been told at all or haven’t been told in the necessary depth.”
Togethxr will publish new content on its social channels daily, including several docuseries which will premiere on Youtube this spring, including: ‘Fenom’, the story of 17-year-old boxing star and 2024 Olympic hopeful Chantel “Chinanita” Navarro’s quest for a gold medal and ‘Kaikaina’, a story following a collective of young Hawaiian surfers “who navigate friendship and competition while honoring the culture of their native homeland of Hawaii." Additional upcoming shows will highlight Tom Brady’s niece and UCLA softball player Maya Brady, Olympian Ibtihaj Muhammad and sports broadcaster Taylor Rooks.
In a launch statement, the four said: “We want to be champions for every young woman who dares to dream, whose ambition deserves celebration, whose potential is powerful and whose path is covered in the glass she shatters.
“There’s never been a place dedicated to her story….We got tired of waiting for someone to build it. So, we did.”
