The Dell Scotland Legacy 2014 Award provides a platform and support opportunities to local programmes that are using sport to address social issues in their communities, helping to make grassroots initiatives sustainable.
All of the shortlisted projects have leveraged the power of Commonwealth Games in Glasgow to use sport to address one or more social issues around the Commonwealth Games three main focuses: Humanity, Equality, and/or Destiny. The Shortlist and Winner have been selected by a judging committee made up of experts and representatives from Beyond Sport, Glasgow 2014 and Dell. The Winner will be announced during the day and the Shortlisted programmes are:
Street Soccer Scotland
Street Soccer (Scotland) works across four of Scotland’s major cities; Aberdeen, Dundee, Edinburgh and Glasgow. Using football to engage people, Street Soccer Scotland provides opportunities to have fun, to interact positively with peers and to develop the confidence, skills and abilities to make positive changes within their lives. Their programmes increase opportunities for people to develop their skills and interests and to expand their horizons through the provision of football drop-ins, annual programmes of personal development workshops and access to football themed education and work placements and volunteering. Street Soccer Scotland utilised partnerships with local authorities, the police, charities as well as consulting widely within local communities when delivering their programmes.
Active East
Active East aims to use the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games as a catalyst to address significant issues relating to young people’s lack of participation in sport and physical activity in the East of Glasgow and to create a local legacy from the Games. 53 Active Champions are volunteering alongside 33 local partner youth and sport organisations are making this happen. The strategy for Active East focuses on partnerships between the numerous and varied local youth and sport organisations, the young people, mentors and staff within them as well as national partners. In the next 6 months, Active East will embrace the 2014 Commonwealth games by creating their own games experience engaging young people and sports clubs to grow the number of people actively engaged with Active East.
Drumchapel & District Sports Centre
Drumchapel & District Sports Centre (the Centre) is a community run sports centre that is home to Table Tennis, Gymnastics, Taekwanda and Amateur Boxing clubs. The Centre is an integral part of the Community Sports Hub strategy in the area which has a wide range of social issues. The services offered by the Centre benefit people of all ages and backgrounds from within the community. Drumchapel & District Sports Centre has impacted the lives of many people in their community by creating: greater self-belief, greater discipline, more self-respect, healthier lifestyles, levels of responsibility alongside motivation, aspiration and team skills.
Healthy Powerful Communities Project
The issue of childhood obesity in Scotland is well reported. Healthy Powerful Communities Project aims to tackle this. The project takes an asset–based community approach to tackling childhood obesity, working with families to change their behaviours in a supported way without simply focusing on weight but emphasising the role of increasing physical activity and improving diet. The project aims to create healthier communities and improve the health and well-being for children, young people and adults. It also aims to empower communities by helping local people gain skills to address the issue of obesity. These aims are achieved by focusing on early intervention, improving diets, increasing physical activity, building community based partnerships and sharing best practices.
Move More Dundee; Inspiring Activity for Local People Affected by Cancer
Move More Dundee is a partnership project within The Institute of Sport and Exercise, University of Dundee and is making a significant difference in activity levels and quality of life of cancer survivors within the local community. The Move More Champions reduce the barriers to accessing physical activity which can benefit the health of cancer sufferers greatly. Move More provides access to a number of different activity programmes which include the ISE gym, ISE exercise classes (both cancer specific and general) and home based exercise programmes. The programme will act as a template as they aim to develop and roll out further Move More referral programmes across Scotland within the next year.
