Phoenix-based educational program, STEM Sports is offering five free STEM lessons involving sports to students in grades 3 through 8 to continue their education at home. The Sport and STEM Alliance member believes it is critical to keep students active and learning and are using basketball, football, soccer and volleyball to teach students science, technology, engineering and math skills while encouraging and engaging children in physical activity.
The lessons provided are family-friendly and require simple sports equipment so both parents and students may be involved in the learning process while students stay home during this isolation period. Additionally, details such as supplies, materials needed and even jobs that are related to the module are supplied.
“I feel like we’re obligated to help,” said Jeff Golner, the founder and CEO of STEM Sports. “This pandemic impacts everyone, especially young students. We want to give students and their families resources to prevent gaps in education ahead of the summer slump. It will also help occupy their minds and bodies during the break.”
In addition to these free lessons, STEM Sports is offering a solution to break up the day in isolation by providing a game called Playing Card Fitness that can act as a recess or PE activity for children. Alongside this, Scott Flansburg who is listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the ‘fasted human calculator’ has launched The Counting Bee, a STEM competition that children can participate in at home.
