SPECIAL OLYMPICS LAUNCH LONDON UNIFIED MILE

May 3, 2019

On Sunday, 26 May, Special Olympics in partnership with London Marathon Events will launch the first ever Special Olympics Unified Mile.

Special Olympics has been offered a dedicated wave within the Vitality Westminster Mile, as part of the event’s commitment to highlighting social inclusion. Just like the Special Olympics movement itself, the Unified Mile is all about participation.

Everyone – no matter their ability level – is welcome to take part. And anyone who joins will have the privilege of running alongside Special Olympics Great Britain athletes – fresh off their tremendous success at the Special Olympics World Games Abu Dhabi 2019 in March.

Speaking about the Unified Mile, Michelle Carney, CEO Special Olympics Great Britain said: “We are absolutely delighted to join forces with the legendary London Marathon team and take part in this brilliant event.”

“Unity and inclusion are two of the driving forces of our movement and a huge part of what our athletes and their families strive for on a daily basis.  Not only will the Unified Mile raise awareness and money for our charity, it’s going to be a great day.”

About Special Olympics

Special Olympics, a client of our sister agency, thinkBeyond, is a global inclusion movement using sport, health, education and leadership programs every day around the world to end discrimination against and empower people with intellectual disabilities.

There are an estimated 1.5 million people with intellectual disabilities (ID) in Great Britain and that number is predicted to rise in the coming years.  Special Olympics – a non-profit charity which provides year-round sports coaching and competitions for people with ID – offers more than just an opportunity to train and compete, it quite literally transforms individuals, families and communities.

You can support Special Olympics by registering to run in the Special Olympics Unified Mile and then registering to fundraise for Special Olympics Great Britain.
