Meet the shortlist: Barclays Sport for Employability Award

Selected from over 350 entries reaching 60 different countries, the Beyond Sport Awards, supported by Comic Relief shortlist represents the standout and unique work being done by organisations across the globe, from figure skating in Harlem to get young girls interested in STEM education, capoeira as a way to rehabilitate displaced young people in the Middle East to socially conscious gym classes as a way to support isolated older people in the disadvantaged communities across the UK.

The 36 nominated initiatives will be invited to the Beyond Sport Summit 2015, with their travel and accommodation provided, where the winners will be announced at the prestigious Awards Ceremony on the second day of the event.

Barclays Sport for Employability Award 

The Barclays Sport for Employability Award celebrates projects that uses sport to tackle issues of unemployment in the community/ies where it is based

A Ganar, Partners of Americas, Latin America 

A Ganar is built upon the premise that soccer and team sports can serve as effective tools for social and economic development by teaching disadvantaged youth the skills necessary to succeed in the labor market. Soccer serves as a platform from which participants learn six core skills that employers look for: teamwork, discipline, communication, respect, a focus on results, and continual self-improvement.

HITZ, Premiership Rugby, UK

The award winning HITZ programme tackles some of the greatest challenges facing young people today - unemployment, crime and disillusionment. Delivered nationally by Premiership Rugby, HITZ uses rugby to increase young peoples resilience, self-reliance and confidence. It gives them the skills to get back into education, vocational training, apprenticeships and employment. HITZ gives those with no hope new hope. 

Sport Tourism With Purpose, Caye Caulker Ocean Academy, Belize

Through the Ocean Academy programme, Caye Caulker Ocean Academy provides a localised solution to a localised problem. Ocean Academy attracts island youth to attend high school by appealing to their interest in the island’s sport tourism economy. 

Street League, UK

Street League is the national charity which uses football to tackle youth unemployment across the UK. Its Academy programme works with 16 to 24-year-olds who face socio-economic barriers and supports them into sustained employment, education and training. On the Academy, young people develop employability skills such as teamwork, communication and self-awareness, and get to play football every day.
