The 5th Annual Green Sports Day celebration takes place October 6 and the global sports greening movement wants everyone to take part!
On October 6, 2016, President Barack Obama welcomed the NHL's Pittsburgh Penguins to the White House to celebrate their Stanley Cup victory, and also utilized the moment to highlight the impressive work of the green sports movement. He declared that day as the first "Green Sports Day" for all organizations involved in the movement to be recognized for their efforts and to leverage the day for increased impact.
The inaugural Green Sports Day acknowledged sustainability leadership within the sports industry and established an ongoing call to action for more innovative approaches to tackle climate change through sports. Hosted by The Green Sports Alliance, each year, the global green sports community comes together to push for inceased action on the world's most pressing environmental and social challenges.
“Our favorite sports teams, athletes and their fans have stepped up to the plate – taking significant steps to reduce their carbon footprints and educate people about sustainable solutions. On Green Sports Day, we celebrate these efforts and recommit to building a cleaner, safer and healthier planet for all,” Obama stated on the inaugural day.
Given the virtual state of the world, the Green Sports Alliance is calling on all organizations working at the sports-sustainability intersection to unite in a simple but powerful campaign to leverage each other's voices and the movement as a whole.
Green Sports Day is an opportunity to inspire greater action and build more sustainable communities where we live and play. Help build momentum around the day to grow awareness of the greening movement across fans, sporting executives and corporate leaders around the world.
