Storytelling platform, Goal Click, is currently taking fans behind the scenes of how players prepped for the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 (FIFAWWC). Through analog photography and written word, athletes from around the world are telling the stories of their lives, communities, club seasons and training camps in preparation of the tournament.
Aiming to show the intersection between life and football, Goal Click teamed up with over 20 players from 18 different nations to document their stories in their own pictures and words. From Australia to the US to South Korea and Switzerland, the players delved into why they compete for their club and country.
“Football plays an important role in my community and in Panama since it is the sport that the majority of people play. It helps young people not to fall into crime. Day by day our country becomes more passionate about this sport,” explains Erika Hernández, a player for the Plaza Amador football club in Panama and the Panama women’s national team.
“There are many challenges for women’s footballers in Panamanian soccer. There are more opportunities if you are a good player and that is how a team from overseas sees you or you reach the national team. There is still a lot to improve but there are changes happening, more support from the fans, and a little more financial support than before.”
Since 2014, Goal Click has given people across the world a platform to share real stories about their own lives and football communities. The organization started with one disposable camera in Sierra Leone and has evolved its content formats - from analog photography to social video, audio and documentary filmmaking. Its purpose is to inspire understanding between people through storytelling, with football as the primary language, though other sports have been included. The platform and network curate unique and untold first-person stories across the themes, competitions and initiatives that matter.
