The Football Association of Singapore (FAS) has a new initiative to support professional national team players with life after football. "FAS Players' Concierge" will help players with financial, educational and career development to help them adapt and evolve post their professional football careers. The program launched during a three-day UEFA Career Assist Workshop in Singapore from June 20-22.
“During our playing careers, we do not have the time to actually look into other options and once we decide to retire, we might find ourselves unsure what to do next,” explains former Singapore international, Baihakki Khaizan who also spearheaded the initiative. “In the long run, I want to assure the public, especially parents of aspiring footballers of the next generation, that football can be a viable career, which does not end once they hang up their boots.”
FAS Players’ Concierge will be a support system providing retired football players with tools to facilitate their post-career growth. It will also support the successful and budding careers of current players.
The program is comprised of six pillars that expands the National Players Welfare Program including:
- Scholarship Credits – providing scholarships and educational opportunities to enhance their skills and knowledge, enabling the players pursue personal and professional growth.
- Job Opportunities – the initiative will connect former players with various sectors, facilitating meaningful job opportunities and networking. It seeks to support players beyond the game and utilize the expertise of government agencies.
- Education Partnership – in collaboration with Republic Polytechnic, this will enable former players to fast-track their educational journey by providing diploma programs. The initiative will equip players who wish to further their education prospects with academic qualifications.
- Coaching Pathways – a supportive process providing tailored programs for players wishing to become certified coaches.
- Overseas Support – to help current players who may be facing challenges while competing overseas, e.g. accommodation and financial aid costs.
- International Cap Bonus – a financial bonus system for players based on their achievements. For instance, players who have earned more than 50 international caps will receive cash incentives.
Khaizan hopes that this initiative will tie in with ‘Unleash the Roar!’ - a national movement to raise the levels of Singapore football. The main goal of the movement is to increase participation and Khaizan expects FAS Players' Concierge will encourage youth and parents to engage with the sport.
