CFP Foundation to Support Teachers Affected by California Wildfires

January 4, 2019

The College Football Playoff (CFP) Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the College Football Playoff, is mobilizing fans in the San Francisco Bay Area and across the United States to raise funds in support of teachers affected by the fires in Butte County, California.

The Foundation is encouraging fans to contribute to the cause with a text-to-donate opportunity that will remain open through the conclusion of the CFP National Championship on January 7. The game, which will see defending champions Alabama go up against Clemson, will take place at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, just a few counties over from where the wildfires had the most severe damage.

The CFP Foundation will ensure that all donations received will go directly to serve the needs of teachers and their students in Butte County.

Some description

Known as “the Camp Fire” due to the location where the fire started (Camp Creek Road in Butte County), the disaster affected the entire county:

  • A total of 14 schools were damaged or destroyed by fire.

  • The fire displaced 5,223 students and 523 school staff; nearly every district and charter school in the county had staff that lost homes or had otherwise been displaced from homes.

  • All 104 schools in Butte County were closed when the fire began, temporarily displacing 31,670 students at the time.

Fans will have opportunities to join celebrities, individuals and companies in exercising donation matches during the drive.

Some description

Due to the proximity of the CFP National Championship and the fan base attending all events of game week, the CFP Foundation is working directly with the education leaders of Butte County schools to invest in the areas of greatest need, as determined by the teachers. The CFP Foundation supports the needs of schools and education programs across California and the United States through its Extra Yard for Teachers fundraising platform, DonorsChoose.org and relationships with colleges, universities and bowl games throughout the year.

The CFP Foundation, in partnership with the Bay Area Host Committee, has already committed a $1 million investment to impact Bay Area educators. This campaign supporting Butte County teachers and students is in addition to the $1 million commitment to the Bay Area.
