BLOOMBERG SQUARE MILE RELAY RUN THE EXTRA MILE IN SYDNEY

Bloomberg Square Mile Relay successfully launched The Extra Mile initiative last week as they hosted a volunteer day with local police officers to deliver education programs for marginalized youth in Sydney.

The new community-led initiative will support projects across the city that provide young people with positive opportunities in education through sports throughout the year.

Some description

This will be the third year that Sydney will host a Bloomberg Square Mile Relay series event. Currently operating in 11 cities across the globe, the race offers a unique platform where companies can network, bond and collaborate outside their working environment through a relay race.

This year, headline sponsor Bloomberg and the Square Mile team decided to broaden the scope of their program to give back to the communities where they operate. Sydney is the first city to host The Extra Mile, but there are plans to expand across the other ten cities.

As the program aims to tackle social issues unique to each host city, the relay community were presented the opportunity to vote through the Square Mile website on a specific impact area. Race participants and spectators chose ‘Education’ as the social issue they felt most needed to be addressed in their city.

The program kicked off with a volunteer day ahead of the Relay race night, where Football United hosted 150 young people from immigrant and indigenous backgrounds, local police officers, and a number of volunteers. They took part in fun and interactive education sessions, football tournaments, and an outdoor BBQ, followed by an evening at the Allianz Stadium watching a Sydney FC match. The program will continue throughout the year with multiple interactive and exciting events in schools across Sydney.

The next race city to host The Extra Mile program will be New York, with 9/11 Memorial selected as the charity partner for the event.
