Bloomberg Square Mile Relay kicked off their community program The Extra Mile in New York City last week, through their partnership with the 9/11 Memorial & Museum.
Leading up to the race night on May 3, volunteers joined "Community Day" which was held at the finish line of the sixth annual 9/11 Memorial & Museum 5K.
The philanthropic partnership will continue throughout the year, as The Extra Mile will work with 9/11 Memorial and Museum to provide kids across the city involved in sport and social change programs the opportunity to attend an event that will showcase the museum's special exhibition on sports. The program will feature content highlighting the power of sports to trigger social change.
This marks the third successive year that New York will host a Bloomberg Square Mile Relay series event. Currently operating in 11 cities across the globe, the race offers a unique platform where companies can network, bond and collaborate outside their working environment through a relay race.
After a successful first two years, the Square Mile team decided to broaden the scope of their program to give back to the communities where they operate. Sydney was the first city to host the Extra Mile, but there are plans to expand across all host cities.
The Extra Mile hosted the special community session in the heart of the Oculus at One World Trade, where kids and their families got a chance to take part in sporting activities and learn new ways to stay active using fun equipment and games. Kids could also try their hand in other activities nearby, including the NYPD Rock Wall and tackling the FDNY Obstacle Course.
Volunteers will be invited to take part in this summer's event as well as special offers around the sports exhibition throughout the year.
