FILM: The Boys in the Boat - Amazon MGM Studios
Set in the 1930s, this inspirational true story centers on the University of Washington’s rowing team. The film follows a group of underdogs at the height of the Great Depression in America and underlines the power of teamwork and courage, which propelled the rowing team to compete for gold at the 1936 Berlin Olympics.
NOVEL: Don’t Tell Me You’re Afraid - Giuseppe Catozzella
This remarkable true story is based on a Somali girl, Samia, who risked her life on a journey to seek asylum in Europe and made it to the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. Despite the lack of resources, the war and restrictions imposed on Somali women taking part in sport, the book depicts how Samia becomes a world-class runner. It highlights the arduous migrant journeys across Africa for millions of refugees and especially the plight of refugee girls wanting to compete in sport. The international bestseller was the inspiration for the film Samia.
PODCAST: A Winning Mindset - IPC & Allianz
This official podcast from the International Paralympic Committee shares personal stories and experiences of Paralympic athletes. The episodes go beyond Para stories to cover a range of educational, confidence and self-improvement themes. Athletes also tackle subjects close to their hearts like activism, leadership, mental health, diversity, inclusion and more. This easy-listening podcast will definitely inspire and motivate, as well as highlight the transformational impact of the Paralympic movement.
STREAM: Breakaway - ESPN Films: 30 for 30
This 2021 docuseries tells the story of two-time Olympic gold medalist and four-time WNBA champion Maya Moore's fight for a man she believed was wrongly imprisoned. In 2019, Moore took a step back from her career to devote herself to working for the release of Jonathan Irons, who was wrongly convicted of burglary and assault and sentenced to 50 years in prison. With the World Day for International Justice having recently passed on July 17, this doc is a must-see candid look into the criminal justice system and the hurdles it takes to reach freedom.
FILM: Gold - Astro Shaw & ACT 2 Pictures
This recently released drama is based on Malaysian para-badminton player Cheah Liek Hou and his inspiring journey to success through adversity. Hou discovers that he is afflicted with brachial plexus paralysis, but regardless decides to pursue his love of badminton and rises to the occasion at the 2020 Paralympic Games. In this highly motivating movie, Hou overcomes numerous hurdles and challenges to become the first-ever Malaysian Paralympic champion in para-badminton.
BOOK: Splash - Claire Cashmore / Sharon Davey
This children’s book is based on MBE and Paralympic gold medalist, Claire Cashmore’s life. Cashmore was born without a left forearm and the amazing story highlights how she never let being different stand in the way of her big dreams. This book is perfect in illustrating how important and empowering it is to conquer your fears, reach for your goals and to never give up in the face of challenges.
