Play may be on pause for the time being, but you can still get your sports fix while staying at home. Here are a few recommendations on what we're watching, reading and listening to at the moment.
Something to listen to: 30 for 30: Cursed and Blessed
ESPN's podcast intertwines the history of the Superdome with the history of the city of New Orleans. After 2005's Hurricane Katrina, the iconic stadium became the scene for real and invented horror stories for the displaced New Orleanians who sheltered there. But then the stadium became a potent symbol of the city's rebirth, a renaissance buoyed by a Saints football team that went on to win the Super Bowl just a few years after its return to New Orleans in 2006. A great inspirational listen.
Something for the little ones: I Am Jackie Robinson
This New York Times bestselling picture book biography by Brad Meltzer has an inspiring message: We can all be heroes. It is the perfect way to bring the story of a trailblazer in sports and society to life for young children, providing them with positive role models, supplementing learning in the classroom and inspiring them to strive and dream. A story about bravery, beating adversity and the need for equality.
Something to bring on the tears: Friday Night Lights
This movie, based on the acclaimed book by H.G. Bessinger, documents the big-time stakes of small-town high school football in Odessa -- a west Texas town with a high school football stadium capable of seating 19,000 and a population of approximately 90,000. Warning: a certain Billy Bob Thornton halftime speech may leave you emotional.
Something to Inspire: Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Superathletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen
A book of adventure where Christopher McDougall sets off to find a tribe of the world’s greatest distance runners to learn their secrets. In the process, he finds out that everything we thought we knew about running is wrong.
