Beyond Sport Foundation Focuses on Collective Impact, More Investment

2019 marked the biggest and most exciting year from the Beyond Sport Foundation in our 11 year history. We launched an innovative new programme to drive greater progress towards the Global Goals through sport: the Collective Impact Awards. In doing so, we were able to support almost three times as many organizations, and nearly double the grant funding, from the previous year.

Founded in 2009, the Beyond Sport Foundation celebrates, supports, raises awareness and provides funding for organizations using sport to help make the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) a reality. It goes beyond the traditional grant-giving models by not just funding projects, but providing tools to help organizations strengthen and grow.

Since its founding, the Beyond Sport Foundation has provided more than $2.1M in funds and distributed more than $8M in long-term strategic support to more than 300 organizations using sport to address social issues around the world.

This year in total, the Beyond Sport Foundation will be supporting 21 cutting-edge organizations from around the world with grant funding, all of which are harnessing the power of sport to create lasting positive change in their communities. Together with our partners, we will be supporting these groups with over $650,000 in funding.

THE COLLECTIVE IMPACT AWARDS

Beginning in 2016, the Beyond Sport Foundation aligned its Awards with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, known as the SDGs or Global Goals. Adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, they provide a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.

The Collective Impact Awards were born out of desire to drive even more impact towards the SDGs and an adherence to Global Goal #17: Partnership for the Goals. Through a deeper, larger investment, we will bring together the best and the brightest organizations from around the world using sport around a specific Global Goal.

Together with the DICK’s Sporting Goods Foundation (DSGF) and The Swedish Postcode Foundation (SPF), we launched two Collective Impact Awards, which will see increased support and investment go to a group of organizations who will work together to share best practice, work through issues in real time, and drive real, sustainable impact through sport.

By enabling true partnership, we believe that we can better support life-changing initiatives and, together, develop a roadmap to solve the critical issues of the moment - one Global Goal at a time.

CUTTING-EDGE ORGANIZATIONS

The Beyond Sport Global Award winners this year were chosen from over 300 entries from over 90 countries worldwide; they represent the best-in-class for sport for development organizations around the world.

From this we narrowed down the entrants to a set of 40 groups that make up the 2019 Beyond Sport Global Awards Shortlist.

The six non-corporate general Award winners will receive funding from the Beyond Sport Foundation between $15,000 and $25,000.

HOLISTIC SUPPORT

The Beyond Sport Foundation prides itself on its ability to provide “holistic support” far beyond just the cash funding. That’s why we partner with leading organizations to provide world-class strategic support in order to build the capacity of our network organizations.

All 2019 Beyond Sport Global Award Shortlisted organizations will receive a comprehensive Business Support Package administered by our parteners. This will help them grow and develop to be successful in the future, with assistance in Monitoring and Evaluation from Up Shot, legal support from Trust Law, best practice sharing from Participate, and fundraising expertise from GivenGain.
