The Sport for One Humanity initiative has put out a call for applications from civil society organizations (CSOs) that are using sport in innovative ways to promote peace and development. Established by Turkish Airlines and backed by the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), the initiative will support sports-based projects that promote a culture of peace, mutual understanding and cooperation among diverse communities and cultures around the world.
CSOs have until May 25 to apply for a chance to receive capacity-building, mentorship and visibility for their organization. The competition will prioritize grassroots organizations that are: strengthening diversity and inclusiveness, educating and empowering youth, women and girls, inclusive of people with disabilities and vulnerable groups and fostering peaceful and inclusive societies.
Based on the “universality of sport and its unifying power,” the main objective is to support projects that build bridges between individuals and across communities in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals. In 2019, UNAOC and Turkish Airlines launched a "Sports for Peace" collaboration during the 74th UN General Assembly. UNAOC is the leading United Nations platform for intercultural and interfaith dialogue. Turkish Airlines states that it is the leading sponsor of sports events in both Turkey and around the world.
Sport for One Humanity is built on the recognition of civil society as necessary and central partners in advocacy, program development and delivery of sports-based initiatives at the community level whose impact can be scaled to national and global levels.
Following a competitive evaluation process, 10 CSOs will be selected to benefit from this international awareness-raising and capacity-building initiative. In addition to the other resources, beneficiaries will be recognized at a ceremony that will bring together influencers in sport, business and civil society, where will have the opportunity to network with their peers and build connections with the international community.
