More about Township Basketball League
Khayelitsha, one of the biggest townships in South Africa, is widely negatively known for, among others, high rates in teenage pregnancy (HIV), poverty, school drop-outs etc. The reason behind this distort is under investigation and probably under-researched. But for those who live in Khayelitsha, ‘the writing is on the wall’. In any given section in this township, there are more shebeens (bars) than sports spaces for social leisure for children.
The greatest concern is that this problem has turned into a culture where the community, consciously or not, have accepted the situation as normal. Furthermore, grown-ups pass on a negative idea on our current youth, breeding yet a community of alcohol-related perpetrators and victims of social issues Unlike in the early 90s, where groups of boys would meet at their nearest basketball court for a game or coaching clinics after school, they are now ‘likely’ to be assumed for mugging. Understanding the reality of poor sports facilities at grasp, boredom among possible leads to youth towards negative leisure, the organisation is dedicated to dealing with this problem using basketball.
Township Basketball League is dedicated to address and need for refurbishment of rundown basketball (sports) facilities and their role in maintaining the health of our society, physically and emotionally. ‘A new culture (slang name for Khayelitsha)’ defines the aim of this project, to introduce a culture of sports to maintain optimism and discovery of potential among youth.
