More about Torres Strait Hockey - Where Sport and Culture Look to the Future
In the Torres Strait Island young people face difficult social, economic and cultural issues including:- child diabetes, domestic violence. Accessing widespread community consultation, we identified to be successful and reach the young people we needed to broaden our delivery scope. Dreamtime and Torres Strait Island Cultural Stories is the base culture of the indigenous people of Australia. Many young people have lost the ability to imagine and dream.
The development of a complimentary art and culture program running in conjunction with an active hockey/sports based program may widen their horizons. In 2008 we secured a partnership with Tagai College which covered 19 educational campuses across 48000km2 from Cape York to Papua New Guinea. We deal with 4 languages including 2 indigenous. Integral to the partnership we ran clinics teaching young people new skills, we incorporated mentor programs in self esteem, leadership, team work and self discipline.
This developed into a small modified competitions and talent squads. We modified coaching programs and designing a special course to adjust to language, resources, facilities and delivery options. We created Hockey Art clinics to learn new skills on and off the field – painting hockey equipment while we themed social issue workshops.
