More about The Global Peace Games for Children and Youth

The Global Peace Games for Children and Youth are an annual event that takes place at the grassroots level in communities in all parts of the world, on or near the United Nations International Day of Peace. It empowers local organizations, brings grassroots communities into the global arena, and engages the attention of children and youth through sport on a common cause. PLAY SOCCER created the first Global Peace Games in 2001, when 26 countries participated.

Each year since then it has provided the leadership to initiate and organize the Games, in strong partnership with organizations such as Right to Play, SOS Children’s Villages, and the City of New York. Any sport can be played though football (soccer) is the most common; art, music, dance are adjunct activities. To provide the global link among all sites, three activities are included wherever the Games are held: signing the UNESCO Manifesto for Peace, reading a special message from the UN Special Adviser on Sport for Development and Peace, and exchanging a handshake of friendship. After the Global Peace Games have been held, PLAY SOCCER produces and distributes the Certificate of Participation and Report on the Games.
