More about The First Green Pro Sports Team
To become the first pro sports franchise to be a "green" organization it was important that the orgaanization first lead by example. The project began by changing the name of the franchise (that had the name for 5 years) from the Nighthawks to the GreenHawks. That was only the start, the organizations committment to the cause is demonstrated in the actions of the entire organization. The team plays in uniforms from recycled and organic materials and all products sold at home games are made from these types of materials, no plastic product is sold.
Through our partnership with Carbon Fund.org the team offset our carbon footprint for all home games and all team and corporate travel. The team also partnered with local youth teams to assist in the NIKE reuse a shoe campaign collecting over 200 used sneakers to be used for recycling projects. Probably the most important tasks the team undertook was to speak at local public schools multiple times each week to teach children the importance of caring for their environment and knowing that one small thing done, rerults in a veru big impact. There are no better messengers to children than pro basketball players that they look up to.
The GreenHawks also launched the "Great Green Idea" challange to all local public schools. Students have submited and implemented at their school or community an idea to help the environment. Four winners will receive cash prizes for their schools.
