More about Swim21 achievement in 2011
Northern Wave Swimming Club is an amateur sports team that is unique in bringing lots of disadvantaged people into taking part in a healthy, wellbeing improvement club. It started 10 years ago because there was no facilities at the world class swimming pools for ordinary people. The segregation was causing different worlds for the elite sports persons as this left the local community citizens, young to old, socially excluded. Northern Wave changed this, it opened opportunities for any person to achieve their best, regardless of who they are. J
ust ten year on professionals support the Northern Wave membership of over 1000 people that have trained hard including the team winning medals at international events. Weekly swim improvement sessions are designed by home grown coaches and the annual swim camp, at Lancaster University, is a great way to get fit. Beginners are always welcome, but the team’s jewel in its crown is its diversity and social inclusion side, including organising Age Concern pool parties and running annual health improvement events in the city centre.
The team spirit has this year won first prize at Manchester Pride Parade and we have just been awarded Swim21 quality mark by the lead sports body.
