More about Sport-Based Youth Initiative For Sustainable Management Of Informal Settlements’ Environment In North Rift Kenya

The program uses the medium of sports to mobilize youths, men and women to participate in community environmental conservation by engaging in community cleanings, environmental campaigns aimed at raising awareness on waste recycling and sustainable environmental management principles and research to generate better practices and replicable environmental initiatives. KESOFO has enlisted over 50 clubs to join their sports development program, for a two-pronged approach:

1. Participate in the weekly sports coaching clinics- which greatly aid the boys and girls by raising their self esteem and community spirit as well as promote social inclusion and address issues of disaffection amongst young people. This strategy is also meant to reduce criminal activity and anti-social behaviour particularly amongst 14-22 year olds

2. Organize bi-monthly inter estate sports competitions within the estates. Before commencement of these games, clean up exercises are normally undertaken.

Thereafter talks on the need to maintain clean environment to educate the locals on behavioral change and the need for them to take care of their environment.Efforts are also being made to integrate the project as widely as possible into the community, using volunteers and other supportive agencies within Eldoret town ( words 191).
