More about Skills 4 Life
For the last 20 years, Hoops 4 Hope has been standing up for South Africa’s township youth and working to fight the harsh realities of post-apartheid life. Located in Crossroads, one of Cape Town’s oldest townships with the highest crime rate, Hoops 4 Hope provides children and young adults from the surrounding areas with a safe and supportive place to play organized sports and develop life skills, in an otherwise crime-stricken and gang-infested community full of negative influences. Hoops 4 Hope combats the high rates of HIV and other health threats that township youth face by using games, role play, and circle discussions during practices to teach the seven Skills 4 Life (Self Awareness, Sense of Humor, Integrity, Respect, Responsibility, Self Esteem, Focus, and the African concept of Ubuntu—the oneness of human nature) and promote critical thinking and discussion about HIV and other dangers. Whether it is providing capacity building training to help our volunteers gain employment, or showing our young teens that there are options to prove themselves and seek success away from the streets, Hoops 4 Hope is dedicated to helping South Africa’s youth, help themselves.
